400kg of gold seized from passenger at airport

Trichy: After a lull in incidents of gold seizing at the international airport here, immigration authorities on Friday night caught a passenger with 400g of gold in his belt, estimated to be worth around Rs 10.33 lakh.

The 35-year-old man, who had arrived on a Tiger Airways flight from Singapore at around 11.30pm, was caught when he was passing through the scanners. The machines beeped indicating the presence of metal. It was found that his belt was covered with cellophane tape and the gold kept inside.

During the interrogation, the officials reportedly learnt that the passenger Perarasan M from Thiruvarur had been befriended by a group of people while he was boarding the flight to Trichy. They had convinced him to transport the consignment. He was travelling on a tourist visa.
