AAI calls for axing of trees

Thiruvananthapuram: The Airports' Authority of India (AAI) has been struggling with a green issue even as trees are being axed across the state in the wake of monsoon-related accidents.

AAI has been encountering much trouble owing to the forest department's tree avenue project along the Chackai-Airport road. Despite several requests, the forest department has refused to cut down the trees.

According to AAI officials, the hundreds of trees lining the airport's boundary wall pose no small threat to the high-security zone.

"The bureau of civil aviation had inspected the airport and concluded that the trees adjacent to the boundary wall are a security threat. They insisted that they be cut. Following this, we sent a proposal to the state government a year ago, but are yet to get a response. Besides, we have also raised concern regarding the possibility of bird hits," airport director George G Tharakan said.
