Mumbai: A survey of slums in the aeronautical area of Mumbai airport is currently under way; it is expected to be completed by August.

The survey of the slums on the Kurla side of the airport and in the runway funnel area, which began in May, is being conducted to ascertain the eligibility of project-affected persons of the airport expansion project.

"We have completed the survey in Kranti Nagar and are now verifying the documents. There are around 1,639 slum families here," said H Sonawane, additional collector (encroachments). D Desai, additional collector, who is overseeing the survey in Sandesh Nagar, Vijay Nagar, Sevak Nagar and Indira Nagar, said an estimated 8,645 families reside in these sectors.
Dilip Kawatkar, joint director of MMRDA, said the Slum Rehabilitation Authority has told them that they have 18,000 tenements in different locations, including Premier Automobile Ltd (PAL) compound at Kurla, which is 1km from the airport slums.
