Bengaluru: The Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) on Wednesday defended the action of the Union government in closing HAL airport for commercial aviation following opening of the new airport at Devanahalli. Appearing for the BIAL, Senior Counsel Uday Holla contended that the Union government, being a licensing authority, has the prerogative to either operate or close any airport as per the law
Submissions were made during the hearing of a PIL petition, filed by Airport Authority of India (AAI) Employees’ Union, which has sought re-opening of HAL airport for commercial aviation.
Pointing out that the AAI has still 30 per cent stake in BIAL, Mr. Holla said that there was no retrenchment in AAI due to closure of HAL airport, but around 200 employees of AAI were absorbed by the BIAL.
