Cargo uplift by Air India from Tiruchi on the rise

Cargo uplift by national carrier Air India Express from the Tiruchi international airport has seen a steady rise from early this year despite heavy passenger load in its flights.

Operating daily flights in the Tiruchi-Singapore and Tiruchi-Dubai sectors, the Air India Express has also contributed to the upward swing in export cargo throughput.

Although the airline started lifting international cargo from January 2014 onwards, the volume of cargo uplift gradually grew from single to double digit – a trend which could be noticed from early 2015.

In the last six months alone the airline had lifted over 170 tonnes of overseas cargo, say airport sources.

It recorded the highest in May when it touched nearly 41 tonnes.  Although there is a heavy demand from the cargo shippers, priority is given to passengers as their movement to Singapore and Dubai has been very robust, says a senior airline official here.
