Decoy aircraft deployed, flight booked last minute

Nagpur:  A couple of chartered planes were waiting at the tarmac of Nagpur airport on Thursday morning as word spread that Yakub Memon's body and his relatives would be flown to Mumbai by an air ambulance. As the ambulance carrying Memon's body reached airport from jail around 10am, both his brother Suleiman and cousin Usman alighted and went inside the cargo area along with the coffin.

It appeared that the kin may take the air ambulance. Soon, however, they were whisked away by cops towards the IndiGo airlines counter from the departure gate to board the private carrier's Nagpur-Mumbai flight. The flight took off at 10.50am, a few minutes behind schedule. The coffin, made in the prison workshop by jail inmates, was booked and carried as a cargo as per rules.

Even as various officials handling the affair had different versions, it is reliably learnt that the air ambulance had been hired by the state government. It was deliberately kept as a decoy due to security reasons, and a plan was already in place to take the body by the IndiGo flight. Airline officials could not be reached for comment.
