Government to Bear Cost of Airlifting Donor Heart

Kochi: In a big relief to the family of Mathew Achadan, who underwent a heart transplantation the other day in a hospital in Kochi, the State Government decided to bear the cost of airlifting the donor’s heart from Thiruvananthapurm on a Naval aircraft.

“The government is actively considering to launch a permanent air ambulance service to deal with such situations,” said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, while speaking to reporters after visiting the family of Achadan at Lisie hospital here on Sunday.

He spoke to Achadan’s wife Bindu, and made  the offer to bear the expense of transporting the heart.

The family had paid `6 lakh to the Navy for transporting the harvested heart to Kochi in a dornier aircraft.

The Chief Minister lauded doctors at the hospital who successfully transplanted the heart on 47-year-old Achadan, who is an autorickshaw driver.
