IATA says govt should build airports and let private players manage them

International Air Travel Association (IATA) chief Tony Tyler who is touring India, is in Mumbai since past two days, meeting travel agents, city airport operators and other stakeholders. In a media interaction on Thursday, Tyler spoke at length on the state of aviation in India and transformation that is taking place in recent times. Excerpts:
There are talks of the government proposing to privatise four more airports in the country? What is your take on it?
The government believes that privatising will help in making airport operations better. This line of thinking does not always bring the desired private results. However, I suggest that they should also consider building the airports themselves and only let its management to the private parties. Many airports in the world have such kind of arrangement.

The freight forwarding agents complain that though Mumbai airport has turned into an impressive passenger terminal, the cargo division lacks the desired infrastructure because of which the trade is suffering...
It was discussed during one of the meetings. We have taken up the issue with the authorities. Things are set to improve, but can't tell you when. On the other hand, use of technology in smooth transition of freight is helping the industry a lot. Around 40% of the trade has gone electronic, especially in the past two years. It will definitely help in de-congestion of the cargo terminal.
