According to ministry sources, new aviation secretary RN Choubey, during a recent meeting with industry stakeholders, said the plan to redevelop the airport is very much on. Choubey could not be contacted for a comment.
The previous central and state governments had prepared plans to run small aircraft, like ATR, from the airport by extending the runway into Juhu beach. However, initial study and surveys done on the project reveal that it would be very difficult to get the necessary permissions for the extension of the runway into the sea. Public opposition is another important factor to be taken into consideration.
"Taking all this into consideration, the project was more or less put into cold storage by the authorities," said a Juhu airport official.
