Juhu airport safety runs into a wall

Mumbai: The construction of a boundary wall skirting Juhu Airport has hit a dead end of sorts as slum dwellers terrorise construction workers and have destroyed built up portions causing the delay in completion.

After a complaint by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), five men from Juhu's Nehru Nagar slum were arrested on charges of breaching the wall. This, however, further complicated the issue with residents making sure that work comes to a standstill.

AAI officials said that work on replacing Juhu Airport's chain-line boundary with a much more reliable pre-stress precast wall, began in early 2014 with a deadline of April 2015 for its completion. "We have covered the areas of Indira Nagar successfully. The problem area is around Nehru Nagar, where we had to seek police protection so that work could be carried out without any trouble," an airport official said.
