Ministry for uniform rule on airport discounts

New Delhi: The civil aviation ministry wants a uniform policy on discounts offered by airports on landing and parking charges, which account for about 6 per cent of an airline’s operating cost.

Low-cost airlines SpiceJet and IndiGo have been protesting against the Bangalore airport’s policy of offering about 40 per cent rebate on landing and parking fees to ‘home’ carriers.

In a meeting with senior aviation ministry officials, the two airlines claimed the present scheme gave preferential treatment to rival AirAsia India.

As per the policy of the GVK-led private airport operator Bangalore International Airport (BIAL), an airline must have its headquarters in Bangalore and park most of its planes there to qualify for the discounted rates. The sop is also linked to the airline carrying passenger traffic of at least one million a year.
