Mufti Takes up Jammu, Kargil Airport Expansion with MoD

Sri Nagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on Saturday urged the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to upgrade and expand the airports in Jammu and Kargil.

During a meeting with Defence Secretary G Mohan Kumar, who called on him here, the Chief Minister took up with him several issues, especially the ones related to the expansion of Jammu and Kargil airports.

In the case of Jammu Airport, also known as Satwari Airport, it has only a 6,700 ft-long runway against the requirement of 8,000 ft- long runway.

The need for Jammu Airport’s expansion has been felt for many years but nothing happened on the ground because of a long pending dispute between the MoD and J&K Revenue Department. At his meeting with the Defence Secretary, Mufti also discussed the issue of transfer of Lower Khurbathang Plateau at Kargil for expansion of the airport there.
