Official’s arrest for smuggling raises fears of airport staff being lured by terrorists

Mumbai: The arrest of Deepak Golani, the security in-charge of Etihad Airways, for gold smuggling, has raised concerns of airport security. "Airlines should take all necessary precautions to keep checks on their employees. Involvement of the security in-charge in such activities is alarming," said commissioner of Customs (airport) APS Suri.

Custom officials said such incidents are very serious as this kind of smuggling network, involving airport employees, can be use by anti-national elements for terror activities. This was the 18th case this year where an airport staffer has been arrested for smuggling gold.

Last year, the Customs had discussed the issue of airport employees' involvement in smuggling cases with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which is responsible for the entire security at the airport. Then it was decided that there should be a separate queue for airport employees while they go out of the airport. The CISF also started checking employees like other passengers. It helped on some extent, as in two cases, it was the CISF that alerted the Customs about airport employees smuggling gold.
