Smugglers fancy their chances of bringing gold to Amritsar airport from Gulf countries

Amritsar: Value difference and easy way to convert black money into white has once again made smuggling of gold lucrative with international smugglers, suspecting lax security, are taking chances to land with the contraband at Amritsar's Sri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport.

Recent recovery of 5kg gold from the toilet of Qatar Airways flight QR 550 arriving at Amritsar from Doha by the air intelligence unit (AIU) of the customs department has revealed that the smugglers were desperately trying to bring in the yellow metal from the Gulf. Customs officials had also arrested one of their superintendent Vajinder Kumar with 394gm gold, hours before Qatar Airways flight touched Amritsar.

Sources in customs said that smugglers had deliberately left 5kg gold in the toilet of the aircraft, which was to be retrieved by "someone" having easy access to the plane, but the AIU sleuths laid their hands on the contraband before it could be taken by their accomplices. "We can't rule out possibility of smuggling of gold in the past as well, especially after the recent recovery of the precious metal. Investigations will reveal the truth," said a senior customs official.
