Pune: With the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj palkhi procession having begun its journey, the district administration has banned the use of drones without seeking prior permission of the local police station in Pune rural areas.
The district administration imposed the ban after the Pune rural police presented it with a report that said the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) could be used as weapons in the hands of terrorists. The Pune city police had issued similar orders last month.
According to the report, submitted by Jay Jadhav, superintendent of police (Pune rural), the police would need to approve of the drone before it can be used. "Drones can be misused by having them photograph or record important religious places and other vital installations like dams and central government establishments. There are intelligence reports that the terrorists might be using these drones to conduct a recce or even use them as weapons. There are event management companies in Paud, Mulshi and Maval, who use drones for functions. They need to inform the local police station seven days in advance. The police will conduct background verification and then decide on the permission," said additional district magistrate Suresh Jadhav, in his ban order passed under the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code.
