AI pilots reject Ashok Hotel over ‘hygiene issues’

New Delhi: Over 30 years after renowned musician Zubin Mehta and his troupe walked out of government-run Ashok Hotel on finding cockroaches in their rooms, Air India's senior most pilots have now revolted against the airline's decision to put them up at the ITDC hotel in Delhi.

The AI Executive Pilot Association (EPA) has complained that "Ashok Hotel has severe noise pollution and hygiene issues which render it unsuitable for cockpit crew use", and that it is "deficient from a fatigue mitigation perspective".
"The selection of such a hotel also violates AI's corporate safety policy. (To the best of our knowledge, no reputed airline accommodates its pilots in the Ashok Hotel)," the association has told the airline management.

Mahesh Sharma, who is minister of state for both aviation and tourism (the latter being the parent ministry of the ITDC) said he will look into the issue. Ashok Hotel at Delhi's Chanakyapuri is the most prestigious hotel in the government chain. However, over the years, Ashok Hotel has - like Air India - fallen from its heady days and Capital's private five star hotels have stolen a march over it in terms of image despite its prime location and sprawl in the heart of Delhi's diplomatic enclave at Chanakyapuri. Sharma is responsible for restoring the lost glory of both AI and Ashok.
