Airlines hit MoD block over airspace use

New Delhi: Domestic air-carriers’ plan to take shorter route to connect various city-pairs has hit an air pocket with the defence ministry yet to give its approval to the proposal.

Some of the routes where airlines want direct routing using flexible use of airspace (FUA) are Ahmedabad-Bangalore, Hyderabad-Pune, Ahmedabad-Hyderabad and Ahmedabad-Muscat. Airlines expect to save up to 15-minute flying time by directly flying on these routes resulting in fuel saving as well.

“The ministry of defence has given a lot of airspace for commercial flights under flexible use of airspace. Airlines are reaping the benefits from it. Discussions are on between the airports authority of India (AAI) and the ministry of defence to provide greater flexibility,” an AAI official said.

FUA allows airlines to fly through restricted zone subject to prior permission from the defence authorities. It provides better co-ordination between civil and defence authorities to allow airlines optimise route.
