Aviation Ministry likely to seek tax break for maintenance, repair and overhaul

New Delhi: The civil aviation ministry is likely to seek a tax break for the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) sector and this proposal is expected to become a part of the civil aviation policy that is being prepared by the ministry.
"Meetings with MRO sector representatives were held in the ministry on two occasions last month and they have been asked to submit their wish-list for the sector and that will be included in the policy," said a civil aviation ministry official, who did not want to be named. One of their recommendations, the official said, was a tax break of seven years.
Once the ministry finalises policy, it will still need approval of the finance ministry and Prime Minister.
The MRO industry's wish of categorisation of the sector has already been accepted by the ministry.
The ministry has asked the Directorate General of Civil Aviation to issue a circular distinguishing between MRO activities and ground handling services, which include baggage handling, cleaning and other services, the official said.
