Bird-hit fears loom over city airport

AHMEDABAD: With the onset of monsoon, birds have been returning to the city airport in large numbers, increasing the risk of bird-hits. In second half of June, Airports Authority of India (AAI) announced that in association with Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, it will launch an awareness campaigns. But little seems to have moved on the ground.

While measures like grass-cutting and routine inspections are being implemented inside the airport, the situation on its periphery remains the same. Birds continue to flock to the airport and have been seen close to the runway. It is to be noted that last year in the monsoon, two major incidents of bird-hits were reported at Ahmedabad airport, in early August. In both the incidents, aircraft suffered damage and had to be grounded.

"The circulars for awareness were issued but no major activity has taken place on the ground," said a source at the airport. "In the rainy season, water-logging and garbage piles attract birds to the areas around the airport, posing a severe threat to flights."
