Vijayawada: The Centre is likely to make an announcement that Gannavaram airport, near here, will be upgraded as an international airport by December this year. The Krishna district administration, which submitted a report to the Centre two days ago on the upgrade of the existing airport, is confident of the Centre making the all-important announcement.
According to district collector Babu A, the airport expansion and modernisation project is well on track.
Speaking to Express on the sidelines of a meeting here Wednesday, the collector said once the airport was upgraded, it would have 14,500 ft runway which could take even A 389 double-decker wide-bodied flights.
“We have submitted a report to the Centre that the survey done by us has indicated that if Gannavaram airport is upgraded as an international airport, not less than 500 international passengers will take flights from there every day. All these passengers are now making use of the Hyderabad airport. It is quite a good number and I expect the Centre to make the announcement,” he said.
