Green troubles stall Navi Mumbai airport work

Mumbai: Though Cidco recently received an environmental clearance to develop 43 acres in Vadghar for those affected by the Navi Mumbai airport project, the agency's green troubles are far from over as 1,217 hectares of land, worth around Rs 30,000 crore according to a modest estimate, is yet to receive a Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) exemption.

Of the 1,217 hectares, spread across Navi Mumbai including locations like Kharghar, Ulve and Dronagiri, 217 hectares are meant for the 12.5% compensation to project-affected persons (PAPs) whose land was acquired for the airport while the remaining 1,000 hectares will be used by Cidco for development. The 1,217 hectares were declared CRZ as per a 2011 notification, based on the high tide line, which was calculated using the salinity level and mangrove growth. But according to Cidco, this is a wrong measure to decide whether the land falls under CRZ.
