How a swanky building was lost to airport project

Tirupati: Information technology infrastructure in Tirupati is likely to suffer a setback as a signature building constructed by the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) is almost certain to be lost to the expansion of the Tirupati airport.

The impressive tower, along with a number of other buildings, falls in a zone that is to be acquired by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) as part of the airport expansion plan. The AAI has notified acquisition of 1,600 acres, which is expected to bring the airport close to the Tirupati-Srikalahasti highway.

Ponnala Lakshmaiah, Minister for Information Technology in the previous Congress regime in the undivided State, was instrumental in getting the tower built strategically close to the airport, as part of a policy to take IT to tier-II cities like Vijayawada, Kakinada and Warangal. Though funded by the Department of IT, the project was executed by APIIC. The three-storeyed building, with a huge pyramid-like structure at its portal, was developed at a cost of Rs.7.5 crore on a five-acre site with a carpet area of 15,000 sq. ft.
