IAF to develop Panagarh Airfield as a base of Super Hercules

Panagarh: In a strategic move to augment its air power the Eastern Command of the Indian Air Force ( IAF) is developing Panagarh Airfield as a base of Super Hercules C-130 J, a multi-purpose carrier aircraft.

The successful landing of C-130J at the new runway at Panagarh airfield during the day is also significant as it enhances the capability of IAF by utilising the airfield which was not being used for quite some time.

Air Marshal Deo said that by May 2016 one Super Hercules C-130J, will be deployed at Panagarh Airfield and gradually the fleet will be increased to six. He also pointed out that there are plans for a larger aircraft, (a tanker variety aircraft) at the Panagarh airfield.

“Panagarh is being developed as a base for C-130J. It is a special forces aircraft and that is why it is designated J,” Air Marshal SB Deo, AOC-in-C, Eastern Air Command, addressing mediapersons, said. “There are also plans for a larger aircraft, a tanker variety aircraft,” he also added.

Explaining the importance of the Panagarh airfield Air Marshal Deo said that Panagarh airfield will serve as diversionary air field to the Kaliakonda Ai
rbase in the adjoining district of Paschim Medinipur.
