Kingpin in Karipur gold smuggling held in Kozhikode

Kozhikode: The directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) on Monday arrested Shahbaz, who is the kingpin of a major gold smuggling racket and the main accused in the Karipur gold smuggling case.
He is the main accused in the Karipur gold smuggling case in which Air India Express airhostess, V S Hiromasa and her friend Rahila Cheerayi along with others had smuggled 39 kg of gold worth 12 crore. The racket was busted after the two women were caught while trying to smuggle 6 kg of gold in November 2013.
Shahbaz, hailing from Koduvally in the district, attacked the DRI team who tried to arrest him from near the fire station at Kozhikode Beach around 7 pm. Two DRI officials have sustained injuries in the attack.
