Meerut: The Uttar Pradesh directorate of civil aviation has instructed the Meerut district administration to stop the purchase of land for construction of the Bheem Rao Ambedkar Airport here till fresh orders are given. The district administration has also been asked about the status of the land already purchased.
In a letter to the district magistrate, the state deputy director of civil aviation, Nujhat Ali, has said that for purchase of farm land for the airport at Meerut, in addition to Moradabad and Faizabad, must stop with immediate effect.
This follows a letter from principal secretary Anita Singh to the director of civil aviation, which questions why the Airport Authority of India (AAI) did not keep up its end of the bargain regarding the airports. "For developing better air connectivity in Uttar Pradesh, an MoU was signed with AAI in 2014 by the state government. For upgrading and expansion of the airstrips into domestic airports, required land had to be given to the AAI free of cost. For purchasing land to give AAI, the government has released money from time to time to the respective district magistrates. But even after a whole year, AAI didn't provide the requisite arrangements like deploying the permanent staff at airstrips," the letter points out.
