The buck for all the delays and cancellations of Air India flights now stops at its regional executive director. The management has decided to make the top officer accountable for improvement in the on-time performance (OTP) of flights arriving or departing from airports of his/her region.
The national carrier has a very poor OTP record in comparison with its competitors, despite the fact that passengers lay strong emphasis on the same while selecting an airline. Insiders claim that many a times the delays and cancellations are avoidable with better co-ordination and management.
The seriousness of the poor OTP can be gauged from the fact that in July 312 arriving flights and 518 departing ones were delayed for more than 15 minutes at city's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. In terms of percentage comparison with other airlines in the same month, AI's OTP frequently lost out to that of its competitors. For example, between 3am and 9am, nearly 28% of departing flights of AI were delayed in comparison to 9% of SpiceJet, 4% of Jet Airways, 7% of GoAir and zero per cent of IndiGo.
