PM jettisons plan to upgrade Chennai, Kolkata airports

New Delhi: Prime minister Narendra Modi has shot down the civil aviation ministry’s move to upgrade Kolkata and Chennai airports on public-private partnership (PPP). With this, the number of airports proposed for privatisation has come down to two – Jaipur and Ahmedabad.

With this, however, the scope of work at Jaipur and Ahmedabad would now be limited to maintenance and operation of terminal buildings.

State-run Airports Authority of India (AAI) would invite fresh request for qualification (RFQ) applications.

An official in the ministry said in a review meeting last month, the PM cold-shouldered the PPP model for the two metro airports, suggesting that AAI had already invested significantly in their modernisation. The official did not want to be identified.
