Shifting flight operations to T3 aimed at cutting expenses

New Delhi: The closure of passenger services at Terminal 1 of the IGI Airport looks imminent with stakeholders working out modalities for converting it into a full fledged cargo terminal.
Shifting of low-cost domestic flights to Terminal 3 aims at cutting down passenger fares, transit time and fuel consumption. A senior official at IGI Airport said the Terminal 3 has the capacity of handling 60 million passengers per year, but the capacity could be increased up to 100 million passengers annually. At present, Terminal 3 caters to nearly 40 million passengers while Terminal 1 handles 10 million passengers annually.
Well-placed sources said shifting the flight operations to T3 will help in reducing the establishment expenditure, which includes operation and maintenance cost and the expenses on security apparatus at the airport.
Sources said the Civil Aviation Ministry is not keen on maintaining two airport terminals located at a small distance.
