Your duty-free bag might need to be lighter

Mumbai: The latest Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) rules on aviation environmental protection will affect how much duty-free material a passenger can carry, empty bags meant for the return trip and excess crew baggage; the aviation regulator wants all these things regulated.

With avoiding additional fuel burn that adds to pollution being high on its agenda, the DGCA has issued a set of guidelines, called Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) on Climate Change Initiatives and Local Air Quality Monitoring in Civil Aviation. Drawing up a framework for fuel management by airlines, the 11-page document asks operators to frame rules that identify and restrict the excess material.

"As per this CAR, airline operators shall develop nine fuel management procedures for compliance without compromising with the safety of aircraft and its occupants," said DGCA chief M Sathyavathi, who has signed the document. "One of them is avoiding additional fuel burn on account of unwanted extra weight and this is where proper weight management shall be ensured."
