Air India to dry lease 14 A320 jets from Kuwait

State-run Air India will soon sign letter of intent (LoI) with Kuwaiti aircraft leasing company ALAFCO Aviation Lease and Finance Company to dry lease 14 A320 jets. The delivery of these aircrafts with all economy configuration will start from 2017.

“The new aircraft would be on a long term lease of 12 years,” a senior Air India official said.

Faced with aircraft shortage for its domestic operations, Air India had last year floated tenders for leasing aircraft from global firms. It tied up with Chinese leasing firm China Aircraft Leasing Company to procure A320 airplanes to replace its ageing fleet. The Chinese lessor has started delivering airplanes and the airline is expected to receive its fifth jet in October this year.

The national carrier’s old Airbus family aircrafts need recurrent maintenance leading to unavailability of planes for its domestic operations. This impacts the carrier’s on-time performance (OTP).
