EC for airport at Mopa on hold

Panaji: The ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC) has deferred its decision on granting environment clearance to the 3,000-crore greenfield international airport project at Mopa following a representation by an NGO from Margao, seeking directions to the state government to conduct a proper and factual study as it alleged that the recently conducted environment impact assessment (EIA) process was full of 'flaws'.

The NGO, Federation of Rainbow Warriors, Margao, brought to the notice of the ministry's expert appraisal committee (EAC) that the recently conducted EIA process was vague on factors such as terms of reference and baseline data, hydrogeology details, impact on local communities, flora and fauna, absence of data regarding parts of Maharashtra within the study area, and failure to assess the negative impact on the Western Ghats and state economy.
