Flights from Koz rescheduled, runway file hits snail’s pace

Kozhikode: A file seeking the mandatory clearance from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for the runway re-carpeting works of the Karipur airport has reached the directorate office in New Delhi only on September 1, the day on which the runway strengthening works were scheduled to commence.

Though airline companies have suspended the operation of flights for eight hours daily from 12 noon to 8 pm from September 1 onwards according to an Airport Authority of India (AAI) directive to facilitate the runway strengthening, the work is yet to commence due to the pending DGCA approval.

According to sources, the delay in submitting the request for 'Execution level Approval' to the DGCA happened due to the time taken for getting various clearances from the safety and operations departments of the AAI.

It is the responsibility of the Aerodrome Standards Directorate of the DGCA to regulate and provide approval for airside works to ensure safeguarding of aerodrome and aircraft operations.

"It has to go through various levels of AAI before the file can be submitted to DGCA for approval. Some questions were raised regarding the company which bagged the tender for undertaking the runway repair works and explanations were given and clearances had to be obtained from the safety and operation departments," a senior AAI official said.
