The government has estimated a total project cost of Rs 24,000 crore for the development of 14 greenfield airports in the country. All these projects will be undertaken by the Airport Authority of India (AAI), which is responsible for the building, operating and maintaining aviation infrastructure in the country.
Officials said that the setting up of the airports have been “in principle” approved by the Centre. According to the estimates, the highest investment is in the Navi Mumbai airport of Rs 15,149 crore, followed by Mopa in Goa expected to cost Rs 3,000 crore. Some of the other airports that will be coming up are in smaller towns like Kannur in Kerala, Bijapur and Shimoga in Karnataka, Pakyong in Sikkim, and Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh.
Civil aviation officials said that some of the new greenfield airports will help in building regional connectivity which is the government’s priority. Estimates for building some of the smaller airports were made only for the first phase.
