ILS at Thiruvananthapuram airport fails in calibration

The U.S.-made Instrument Landing System (ILS) installed at the Thiruvananthapuram international airport to guide aircraft to precision landing has failed in calibration.

The glitches were noticed after the ILS, procured from Selex ES U.S., was put to a trial run after the calibration was carried out using the calibrating aircraft of the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

The authorities have zeroed in on the snag to the Glide Path, one of the three components of the ILS, Airport Director George G. Tharakan told The Hindu .

Glide Path provides vertical guidance to the pilot during the approach. It is located 750 to 1,250 ft down the runway from the threshold, offset 400 to 600 ft from the centre line of the runway.

The authorities will replace the antenna of the Glide Path, which was found to be creating the hurdle.

It has been flown in from Guwahati. Localiser and Distance Measuring Equipment are the other component of the ILS.
