MHA leaves aviation ministry foxed on Robert Vadra's no-frisk status

New Delhi:  Seeking the home ministry's views for taking Robert Vadra off the no-frisking list at airports has left the aviation ministry in a bind, due to which the Congress president's controversial son-in-law could continue to enjoy that privilege for some more time.

MHA, in its note to aviation ministry, has said that three categories of people — Vadra, special protection group (SPG) protectees and His Holiness the Dalai Lama — have been exempted from pre-boarding security checks "only for facilitation purpose and not on security grounds." The home ministry has now left it to the aviation ministry to decide on whether these three categories should be in the no-frisking list or not as this issue is in their purview.
"The ministry of civil aviation is, however, requested to consider facilitation/protocol requirements (of these persons) in consultation with SPG for Vadra and SPG protectees and ministry of external affairs for His Holiness the Dalai Lama," MHA's note seen by TOI says.
The aviation ministry is in a bind now as SPG protectees include ex-prime ministers and their families — hence the likes of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul and Priyanka — apart from the next of kin of other ex PMs. Taking SPG protectees off the no-frisking list could mean making them stand in queues at airports.
