Mumbai man held with Rs 42 lakh gold at airport

AHMEDABAD: Customs department officials arrested a Mumbai-based man for smuggling 1.584 kg gold worth Rs 42.13 lakh at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International airport late on Monday night. Saud Mehmood Shaikh was held with gold concealed in wheels and handle of his trolley bag and also in adapter of electronic toys. This is the third incident of smuggling reported this month. Last month, three incidents of smuggling were reported at airport.

Shaikh had arrived from SpiceJet's SG-016 flight from Dubai. "The gold was concealed in various places by the carrier. Larger portions of gold were hidden in handle and wheels of trolley bag. Some gold was concealed in the adapter of electronic toy car and keyboard," said a Customs official.

The customs official further said that gold was coated in such a way that it took time to establish the material was gold. "He had also used rhodium to coat the gold. Total quantity was 1.584 kg," added Customs official.

According to sources, Shaikh is a carrier. Further investigation and legal proceedings in the case are under progress.
