Vijayawada: In order to expedite the process of getting international airport status for Gannavaram, experts have called for scheduling of flights to aviation hubs like Dubai, Singapore and Doha. They said that if such flights can be arranged without much delay, it will help the international airlines gauge the mood of passengers.
Even as the notification for land acquisition for expansion of the airport is awaited, M Subba Rao, a former Airports Authority of India (AAI) employee, who served as director of Bengaluru, Calicut and Bhubaneswar airports, suggested operation of international flights instead of waiting till land is acquired and things gain momentum.
"We never know how long it would take to get the international airport status with the major aspect of land acquisition pending. Until then, it is better to try and run international flights on an ad hoc basis with the intervention of state government and see the mood of the people," he emphasised.
