Screening firm told to stop ops, cargo piles up at airport

Mumbai: Over 300 tonnes of export cargo has piled up at a warehouse at the Mumbai airport in the past 24 hours for want of an agency to carry out the mandatory security screening of these goods. The problem arose after a private company authorized to carry out the screening was ordered to put its security job functions on hold by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).

The screening of passenger baggage has not been affected.

The company, Global Airport Services, carries out security job functions for a majority foreign airlines. For instance, carrying out the mandatory security screening of cargo before it goes into the belly hold of these passenger aircraft. With no provision for screening the cargo, the airlines have no option but to leave behind the cargo.
