Survey for runway extension begins

Mattannur: Ports Minister K. Babu has said that hurdles to the plan for acquiring additional land for extending the length of the runway of the Kannur International Airport coming up here from the 3050 metres to 3400 metres have been cleared as action committee of local residents protesting against the extension has agreed to resume stalled survey works.

Visiting the airport project site here on Monday to review the progress of the works, Mr. Babu said that the survey resumed after the action committee consented to allow the survey that could identity the extent of land to be taken over.

Barring the incessant rains in the project site that could slow down the ongoing works, the progress of the works was satisfactory, he said adding that as per the existing plan, the trial landing would be held by December 31, 2015.
