13kg gold worth Rs 3.6cr seized, 4 women held

New Delhi: Four women were arrested and 13kg gold worth Rs 3.64 crore seized from them at IGI Airport on Monday night. Customs officials said it was one of the biggest hauls by them in a day.

The women, in their late 20s, arrived from Dubai in two different flights and were intercepted at the green channel by the officials. They have been identified as Nida Tashwin, Neethu James, Parvin Nazima and Athira Thankappan. While James and Thankappan arrived by an Air India flight—AI 996, the other two took an Indigo flight—6E 024. Two of them belong to Bhatkal in Karnataka, while the others are from Kasaragod in Kerala.

"Our intelligence units at the airport spotted these women due to their suspicious activities. They were followed and were intercepted at the green channel. After their thorough baggage search, our women staff frisked them and found gold bars taped up around their body under the clothes. More than 110 gold bars, weighing 100gm each, were seized," said Vinayak Azaad, additional commissioner of customs at the airport.
