AAI transfers two more airports to Bengal

Kolkata: Balurghat and Malda are all set to be added to the state's aviation map as Airports Authority of India (AAI) will transfer these two airports to the state government against a token price of Re 1.

The state government is now engaged with several airlines for running regular scheduled or non-scheduled flights that would connect Andal airport in south Bengal with Coochbehar, Malda and Balurghat in north Bengal.

The PWD will spend Rs 6 crore for renovating both the airports. The state government has also engaged RITES for preparing a detailed project report for the project. "At the recent meeting between Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Union civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapati Raju, AAI agreed to transfer the non-functional airports to the state in lease for 30 years," said a transport officer.
