State-run Air India has shelved its plan to launch flights on the Delhi-Toronto route even as the Canadian flag carrier Air Canada decided to introduce direct flights on the route to tap the significant Indian traffic on the sector.
“Besides crew shortage, there would be fog related issues with the onset of winter. We have decided to put the plan on hold," a senior AI official said.
Air India earlier operated a direct flight to Toronto but suspended operations in 2012 due to heavy losses on account of high fuel price and low passenger revenue realisation.
Earlier this year, it planned to restart the flight besides starting a nonstop direct flight to San Francisco after American Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reinstated India’s safety ranking and allowed local carriers to expand operations to the US.
