Airlines body accuses CIAL of defying HC orders

Less than a month after the Punjab and Haryana High Court ruled that depriving five private airlines and the Federation of Indian Airlines to carry out ground handling was patently illegal, arbitrary and unreasonable, the association has alleged that Chandigarh International Airport Limited (CIAL) is defying the orders.

In an application, the federation through senior advocate Manmohan Lal Sarin and aviation lawyer Nitin Sarin alleged that the CIAL was denying the airlines the right to self-handle their planes, the right which was specifically and unambiguously upheld by the High Court on September 24.

It has neither renewed the airport entry passes of the ground-handling personnel of the airlines, nor allotted necessary space in the new terminal to the airlines to undertake ground-handling activities.

The Sarins added the federation was moving the High Court to avoid unnecessary hardship to the travelling public. Taking up the matter, Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain of the High Court issued notice of motion, fixed October 20 as the next date of hearing, and directed: “Till then status quo be maintained as it was operating on September 24”.
