Aviation on a green high as high-tech solutions cut carbon footprint: Report

Mumbai: Two million tonnes of carbon dioxide is released on average every day by aeroplanes that criss-cross the planet and fly more than eight million people to their destinations. Over the past few years, the global aviation industry has been particularly innovative in cleaning up its carbon footprint.

A few decades ago, the most talked-about green invention was the upturned aircraft wingtip, a biomimicry of the wingtips of steppe eagles. The curvature at the end of the wing reduced drag, which in turn led to lower fuel consumption and lesser carbon emission. Today, it is just one of the many designs that make aircraft more fuel efficient and lower emissions.
