Bhubaneswar: International operations from the Biju Patnaik Airport (BPIA) may hit a roadblock with the Customs Department expressing reservations about providing services to flights operating on hub and spoke model.
In a letter to Air India (AI) and Airports Authority of India (AAI), the Customs Commissionerate (Preventive) has stated that it would not be able to mobilise manpower for three departures and three arrivals in a day as it is faced with acute staff shortage.
Presently, two flights operated by Air India are flying international passengers to and from the city. One arrives at 9.05 am and the other departs at 2 pm for Delhi.
The national carrier is stated to have approached the Customs to provide staff for their 9 pm flight to Delhi which is planned to be converted into international through the hub and spoke model. This has raised consternation in the latter which is struggling with severe staff shortage in its ranks.
