Dept may use Illegal buildings near airport

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has completed more than 25% of the survey of unauthorised buildings around key defence establishments in Lohegaon and plans to finish the work by year-end.

The authorities are also considering the option to use these buildings as residential facilities for defence officials.

In June this year, the Bombay high court directed the PMC to pull down illegal structures around the aerodrome. The high court bench of Justices Abhay Oka and Anil Menon also directed the civic body to carry out a survey of illegal constructions in the area.

A committee comprising the city engineer and officers nominated by the Air Force Station, Lohegaon, has been carrying out the survey. The committee has been given six months for the work. A hearing of affected persons also has to be conducted before the buildings are demolished."The groundwork is going well. We will finish our work by the December-end deadline," a PMC official said, requesting anonymity.
