Thiruvananthapuram: In a big boost to the Kannur International Airport project, Emirates has confirmed operation of international flights from there once the airport becomes functional.
In a letter sent to civil aviation secretary Rajiv Nayan Chaubey, Dubai civil aviation authority director general Mohammed A Ahli requested permission to start services from Kannur airport from mid-2016.
The international airline proposes to add 5,000 seats in each direction per week.
"We are happy to hear that work is progressing well on the Kannur Greenfield airport and it will be ready for commercial operations by mid-2016. Emirates is keen to launch services to Kannur airport as soon as it becomes operational," Ahli said in the letter, a copy of which is with TOI.
