KIAL Looks Sunward for Power Needs

Thiruvananthapuram: Taking cue from the Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL), the Kannur International Airport, which is nearing completion, too, is looking sunward to meet its electricity needs.

The initiative will begin in a small way with a one-megawatt (MW) project near the airport terminal, but a much bigger project is on the cards, and it will be implemented once the airport commences commercial operations, officials of Kannur International Airport Ltd (KIAL) said.  KIAL has already invited EoI for the 1-MW project, which will meet some of its internal power needs. This first step in the solar way is expected to cost the airport Rs 4 to Rs 5 crore.

“We are also planning a joint venture project, either with the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) or some other power sector institution, for setting up a much bigger solar power project on airport land,” KIAL managing director G Chandramouli said.
