Kannur: CPI(M) State Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan today said some people were trying to sabotage the Kannur Airport development.He said this while inaugurating the one day sit-in agitation of MLA E P Jayarajan in front of Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL) office at Mattanur. Mr Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the Oommen Chandy-led Government wanted to inaugurate the airport before completing the proposed runway of 4000 metres. The UDF Government is planning to inaugurate the KIAL by landing a small aircraft after only constructing 2400 meters of runway by December 2015.Mr Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the EK Nayanar led LDF Government had begin the works of land acquisition of KIAL but later the A K Antony-led UDF Government closed the Special Tahasildar for Land Acquisiton office. Then the V S Achuthanandhan led government come into power and started the second phase of land acquisition and speeded up the works besides giving an attractive rehabilitation package to people who \\ gave land. Meanwhile, MLA E P Jayarajan said the people will not allow inauguration of the airport before completing the full runway work. If the government tried to inaugurate it, the people would block the inaugural function by assembling at runway on the inaugural day. Mr Jayarajan demanded the runway of the KIAL should be extended to 4000 meters.
