Massive debts bring down shutters on Ahmedabad airport bookstore

Ahmedabad: Regulars to the domestic terminal at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport are probably familiar with the little bookstore that shut shop more than a year ago. The reason, it seems, is that the owner has to clear a massive debt with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the two parties are currently involved in a legal tussle on the matter. While concerned authorities said the unit will continue to house a bookstore, the tender for the same will be authorised only after the legal matter has been solved.

The book store, named Shubh Kamna, located near the security check-in, downed its shutters around a year and a half ago. It was especially popular among tourists, especially foreigners, as it sold memorabilia related to Mahatma Gandhi, said Mahesh Kumar, senior manager of the commercial department of AAI (Ahmedabad), told Mirror "The shop owner was a resident of Jaipur who had registered the store in his wife Geeta Tiwari's name. The shop opened doors in April 2013. Eventually, the owner took permission from the airport authorities and expanded the store within two months of opening.
